Microsoft Surface Pro : Releasing on 9th Feb for $899

MicrosoftSurface pro (for its comparison with RT see our old post)  is going to be released on 9th Feb with price of $899 ($999 for the 128GB version). Initially it will be available in at Microsoft stores in the United States and Canada, at the online Microsoft store and at Staples and Best Buy and other retailers.

The lower-cost version of Surface, with a starting price of $499, is now sold at Microsoft retail stores in the United States and Canada and online in the US, Australia, Britain Canada, China, France and Germany.

Unlike some Surface RT bundles, the Surface Pro doesn't come with a Type Cover or Touch Cover. Those are sold separately at $130 and $120, respectively.

It does come with a pressure-sensitive Surface Pen stylus with palm-rejection technology that magnetically clips to the charging port. Add in a Type Cover (incredibly useful but not essential if you have your own keyboard and mouse) and the Surface Pro will effectively start at $1,029.

Prices for Britain, which would include VAT, have not been released.

"The response to Surface has been exciting to see," said Microsoft Surface general manager Panos Panay. "We're thrilled to continue growing the Surface family."

That's alluding of course to Windows 8 Pro running on a real PC processor -- Intel's Ivy Bridge: That combination should allow Surface Pro to run applications more like a laptop than a tablet.

Microsoft also points out that the Surface Pro includes a USB 3.0 port (the Surface RT has only the slower USB 2.0 port) and the Mini Display Port connector (which RT doesn't have).

It weighs 2 pounds -- light for a laptop, heavy for a tablet. Excited to see user’s response.

However, it still lacks mobile network connectivity, meaning that users will have to be within range of a Wi-Fi network to access the internet on the device.

The Surface Pro will come packaged with the Surface Pen, which allows users to write or draw on the device,

'Surface Windows 8 Pro provides the power and performance of a laptop in a tablet package,' Microsoft said in a release.

'Perfect as your one device — at home, in the office, or on the road — it can run Windows 8 applications, as well as current Windows 7 desktop applications.'

As well as the x86-type Intel processor, the Surface Pro comes equipped with 4GB of RAM and a sparkling 1920x1080 high-definition display, compared to the Surface RT's 1366x768 screen resolution.

The screen also supports 10-point multi-touch, double what its little brother can offer.
However, because of the power demands of i5 chip it also has a shorter battery life, managing closer to five hours against the ten hours more typical for rival tablets.
