After the
recent Delhi rape case, which happened to a MBBS aspirant girl in Delhi, India,
it kind of woke up all Indians. Many protests, candle march being conducted by
many people to support the victim and against the culprit. Even in Facebook and
in other social sites I have seen people posting on this behalf.
So technology
and technical people did not stand behind.
The intense spotlight on crimes against women is making people think
and invent 'weapons' for the public good. Even children are showing concern.
Four school kids in Thane have designed a robotic sandal that can set off a
distress siren if the woman wearing it is being attacked. A Team member, says
"We wanted the gadget to be something that women won't forget to carry
daily. We thought of lockets and bangles, and then decided to integrate our
idea with sandals." When the sandal, fitted with metal rivets, is hit
twice on the ground, it activates a wireless alarm in a small black box which
can be carried in a purse. The sandal can also give a mild shock to the
attacker and also sets off a recorded voice asking for help.
Society
needs such help, says IIM-A's Prof Anil Gupta, executive vice chairperson of
the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), Ahmedabad. "It shows that the
anxiety has percolated to children too. I am proud of the children who are
coming up with such ideas. Our generation didn't do anything about such
issues," he says.
The NIF is
already working on the viability of another young student's brainwave. Manu
Chopra, a class 12 student of G D Goenka School, Rohini, and a Times Scholar,
has innovated an anti-molestation device that can be worn like a wrist watch.
"My sister was not being allowed to go out of the house after 9 pm. When I
understood why, I decided to design something to help girls like her. I made a
portable device attached with a nerve conduction velocity (that measures the
speed of an electrical impulse going through a nerve). When the chip detects
increase in speed of nerve impulses due to stress, the entire dial of the
'watch' is activated and becomes a shock device. It can give shocks up to 8 ampere
which can paralyse the attacker for 5-10 minutes, giving the girl a chance to
escape. There's also an attached camera that takes photos which would help
identify the attacker later." NIF has helped Manu to make a prototype and
patent his device.
So looking
it all, I can only say kids are showing their interest and best to do some
better for humankind and girls, then why some people do such crimes. Can it not
be passes to them as a message?
